State's largest solar farm opens in Kalona
Farmers Electric Cooperative cut a ribbon in Kalona this morning for a new array of 2,900 solar panels capable of generating more than 1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. With its new solar array, the 650-member cooperative in Frytown becomes a national leader in renewable energy, with the highest per-capita solar generation rate - 1,800 watts per customer- of any utility in the country, it said. The array will generate enough energy to power about 120 homes. The solar farm is part of the cooperative's strategy to generate 15 percent of its power locally using renewable sources by 2025.
