This past week I was talking with a widow who is receiving life-time benefits after he husband was killed by a cement wall that fell, crushing his skull. We were dicussing how things were going when she told me about a phone call from an insurance adjuster. An insurance adjuster she had never spoken with before called to do a “health check”. This was a new one for me. A health check of a widow?
OMG. The red flags went up immediately!
INSURANCE ADJUSTERS' TRICKS OF THE TRADE
Insurance companies have a lot of tricks to keep an eye on a widow or widower who are receiving benefits. Some include programming delays and missed checks in order to force the widow/widower to periodically come forward. This way they know you are still alive. Then there is Facebook trolling and other social media accounts to watch for engagements or remarriages. Yeah, belive it or not, insurance companies have bots and staff who get paid to troll your Facebook account.
INSURANCE ADJUSTERS' HEALTH CHECKS IS A WHOLE NEW GAME
But a health check? This is a new one. It is new because the insurance industry hopes lawyers will not help you, not represent you because the Iowa legislature thinks they took us out. They think they have...but they haven't. They can't call you if you are repesented, but if not, then you're fair game for direct contact.
You may wonder why collecting information is important to the insurance company.
It is important in order to know when to stop benefits, when to refuse to commute benefits and when to reduce benefits to a two-year-lump sum.
WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES AN INSURANCE ADJUSTER'S HEALTH CHECK MAKE?
It may not be a big deal today, but tomorrow it may well be. Then it is a big deal that these fake health checks are going on because everything they find out goes into an electronic file to be used at a later time. I have done this for over 35 years and knowing the insurance industry like I do, I know they are calling for no reason other than to add an electronic note to their file in order to add road blocks at some later date.
The business model is developing into a full frontal assault on grieving widows and widowers.
The difference to you is, that none of this will ever result in you being paid more, only less. Yes understand this point. You can never get more, unless the weekly compensation rate is wrong, only less.
A few days ago I talked about the widow and orphan benefits after the bread-winner gets killed on the job and how they use a fake discount rate to pay you less. I detailed how the Republican controlled Iowa Legislature stole your right to receive a fair lump-sum based on simple math, as opposed to some insurance company’s bottom line driven down by their lousy investments.
WHAT ARE THE FACTS?
Your spouse dies at work and you are getting life-time benefits based on your spouse’s earnings at the time of the death. Each and every week you depend on that check to buy groceries, to pay the mortgage and to buy health insurance. Let’s say that amount is $650.00.
THE FAKE PHONE CALL
One day the phone rings and low and behold it is some adjuster introducing herself as working for the insurance company who sends you that weekly check. Oh my she sounds pleasant. She then says this is a “health check”. She offers fake condolences and tries to chat you up.
She wants you to lower your guard because that is what she is paid to do. She is nothing more than a high-priced spy being sent in, in order to extract information from you and to drop bread crumbs into an insurance file.
THIS HEALTH CHECK IS AS FAKE AS A DRIVER’S LICENSE FOR ELEVEN YEAR OLDS
A health check?
I have never heard of such a thing.
Because first of all, a workers’ compensation insurance company has no right to be calling a widow, widower or an orphan to ask about their health. IT IS NONE OF THEIR DAMN BUSINESS.
SO WHY MAKE THE FAKE HEALTH CARE CALL?
There is but one reason and it has to do with you maybe later asking to turn that weekly check into a lump sum. They want to have in their electronic file information that will lead them to pay you less.
THAT FAKE DIALOGE - WHAT MIGHT THEY WANT TO KNOW?
I have always warned my clients that just because they seem friendly you should not trust the insurance adjuster. Quite the opposite. They are digging. Spying. When they act like they care, ask if they were at your spouse’s funeral. Ask if they sent flowers to the wake. It is all fake. They are only interested in information to use against you. Information to either not consent to the lump-sum or to offer you less by simply increasing the discount rate.
