Several employees at the Department of Veterans affairs have come forward with various allegations of problems within the department, attaining the status of whistleblowers, and are now being punished by insiders at the department.  Managers in the VA are illegally accessing and changing these employees' medical records to cast doubt on their credibility, including accusations regarding mental health.  Managers are also demoting such employees.  The activities reported by these whistleblowers include failures by the VA to properly handle veterans with suicidal tendencies and deleting patient appointments.  Beginning in 2010, the VA has received attention for their regular punishment of employees who report improper practices at the VA, yet only three VA managers have been fired for such behavior.  An accountability review committee was established in 2014 to address problems within the VA and has 80 cases right now, 15 of which relate to whistleblower retaliation.
