Volkswagen admitted in September to installing software in 11 million of its diesel vehicles that was designed to cheat emissions tests. Since then the U.S. Justice Department pledged to hold individuals at VW responsible, but the suit just filed does not single out anyone at the company. The civil lawsuit sues the company directly, alleging that it installed illegal software devices with the intent to impair emissions tests and causing harmful air pollution. The Justice Department alleges that VW has not been compliant with efforts to remedy the situation and that discussions regarding recalls have not been sufficient to resolve the problem, such that the U.S. Justice Department felt a federal lawsuit was necessary. Several other countries are continuing to investigate the emissions software issue, as well as attorneys general in each of the 50 states.
