The Food and Drug Administration announced on August 11 that Specialty Compounding, LLC was issuing a voluntary recall for all of its products distributed nationwide.  Recent reports of bacterial blood infections caused by the company's calcium gluconate infusions prompted the recall.  The products were distributed directly to patients, and to health care facilities.  All are directed to discontinue use and properly dispose of the remaining products.  Two patients in Texas received the infusions and then developed the infection "Rhodococcus equi;" cultures of the infusion products themselves show growth of the bacteria that leads to this infection.  The infusions were meant to treat conditions associated with low calcium levels among others.  The FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are working to discover how far-reaching the contamination has spread.
