NARRATIVE

UNIT #1 WAS A TRAVELING WESTBOUND ON INTERSTATE 80 AND WAS A RENTED BOX MOVING TRUCK FROM PENSKE. UNIT #1 WAS ALSO PULLING A 2008 FORD FUSION(ILLINOIS PLATE K438480) THAT WAS ON A DOUBLE AXLE TRAILER FROM PENSKE. I WAS ADVISED THAT PENSKE EMPLOYEES HOOKED UP ALL EQUIPMENT ( TRUCK TO THE TRAILER). THE DRIVER OF UNIT #1 FELT AND HEARD SOMETHING BEHIND HIM WHEN HE NOTICED THAT THE CAR AND TRAILER HE WAS TOWING HAD COME UNATTACHED FROM THE TRUCK. THE TRAILER WITH CAR ATTACHED SPUN AROUND IN THE LANES OF WESTBOUND INTERSTATE 80. UNIT #2 WAS ALSO WESTBOUND AND WAS UNABLE TO AVOID STRIKING THE TRAILER WITH CAR ATTACHED. AFTER UNIT #2 STRUCK THE CAR TRAILER, UNIT #2 CONTINUED INTO THE MEDIAN CAUSING MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END OF UNIT #2 BECOMING STUCK IN THE MUD. THE CAR THAT WAS ON THE TRAILER BECAME UNATTACHED AND SPUN AROUND COMING TO REST IN THE TRAVELED PORTION OF THE ROADWAY. THE DRIVER OF UNIT #1 STOPPED IMMEDIATELY AND THE 2 OCCUPANTS MOVED THE CAR AND ANY OTHER DEBRIS OFF THE ROADWAY TO AVOID ANY FURTHER COLLISIONS. NO ONE WAS INJURED IN THIS ACCIDENT. AFTER EXAMINING UNIT #1 WE NOTICE THAT HITCH WAS STILL ATTACHED TO THE TRUCK AS IT WAS ASSEMBLED. IT APPEARS THERE WAS A HORIZONTAL PIN IN THE TRAILER TONGUE THAT WAS MISSING THAT CAUSED THE HITCH/ TONGUE TO BECOME UNATTACHED FROM THE REST OF THE TRAILER.
