History Teacher Dies in Traffic Accident
Donna Wynn of Sioux City died in a traffic accident that occurred on around 11:30 p.m., Sunday, August 28th in Plymouth County. Wynn missed a curve as she was driving and continued into the path of oncoming traffic. She was struck by a semi and died from her injuries. Wynn had been awarded teacher of the year in 2009.
Minnesota Motorcyclist Killed in Collision
Coty Curtis Vickerman, 29, of Mabel, Minnesota, was driving his motorcycle northbound on County Road 40 in Winneshiek County at around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 30th. Vickerman lost control and veered into the southbound lanes where he was struck by a car driven by Damien Michael Johnson, 20, also of Mabel. Vickerman was killed and a 20-year-old passenger, Joseph D. Wathier, was injured. Officer’s stated that Wathier was likely saved by his seatbelt. He was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released.
Construction Worker Killed by Speeding Vehicle
62-year-old Willie N. Holley was killed on Thursday, September 1st as he was working in a road construction zone just outside of Blue Grass. A car, driven by 18-year-old Sebon Reese of Daveport, was traveling at a high rate of speed on US 61 when he maneuvered to the left median to avoid traffic. Reese lost control of the vehicle and swerved into the east-bound lanes where he struck Holley. A sheriff patrol car was currently in pursuit of Reese at the time of the accident. Holley died from his injuries, while Reese and a one-year-old passenger were transported to a local hospital with injuries.
One Dead in School Bus Accident
Ronald Kephart, 50, of Garnavillo, struck a school bus that was turning onto Lace Avenue in Guttenburg at around 4:00 pm on Thursday, September 1st. Although the school bus did have student passenger at the time, none reported any injuries. Kephart died from the injuries he sustained in the crash. Police officers are investigating the cause of the incident.
Woman Killed in ATV Crash
An ATV crash that occurred on private property in Kalona shortly after midnight on Saturday, September 3rd took the life of Elizabeth Lenton, 22. Lenton had been riding the ATV along with Alex Merritt, 28, when Merritt lost control and he and Lenton were thrown from the ATV. Both were transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where Lenton was declared dead. Merritt’s condition is unknown at this time.
Man Killed in Head-On Motorcycle Collision
22-year-old Johnathon Cooper was killed just before 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 3rd. Cooper was driving his Yamaha motorcycle on Madison Avenue in Burlington when he crossed over the center line and into the path of an oncoming Chevy Trailblazer. The driver of the Trailblazer, Raeburn Schuyler of Dearborn, Michigan, was not injured in the incident. Cooper, however, was pronounced dead at the scene.
One Dead in Single Vehicle Rollover Incident
Omar Flores, 32, of Calmar, was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Sunday, September 4th. Flores had been travelling in his pickup truck on W14 at around 3:30 a.m. when he failed to maintain control, careened into a ditch and then rolled his truck. Flores, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
