Motorcycle Safety - Wisconsin and Iowa experience similar death rates with deer collisions

Posted on Jul 11, 2008

Both Iowa and Wisconsin have similar death rates for motorcycle-deer collisions. Each is at around 10 deaths per year. Not an unreasonable number when compared to the number of registrations for motorcycles. Couple the increased number of motorcycles on the road with and increase in deer population then subtract mandatory helmet laws and you have a deadly combination.

"The Wisconsin Department of Transportation reports when cars or trucks hit deer, there's about a 2.5 percent chance the driver or passengers will get hurt or killed. When motorcyclists hit deer, their odds of injury or death are about 85 percent."

"The increase in deer-motorcycle deaths, however, isn't unique to Wisconsin. Iowa recorded a record 10 deer-motorcycle deaths in 2007 and nine in 2006 after recording only 18 such fatalities the previous 10 years. Iowa hit those marks with far fewer motorcycles than Wisconsin, with a record 146,000 registered in 2006."

More statistics are shown in the article by Pat Durkin at the Green Bay Press Gazette.
