How do I lawyer my own claim?

Asked another way, if I represent myself, do I have a fool for a client? I don't like hiring lawyers. They are way too expensive and I don't like the feeling of someone else being in control of my life. But there have been times when I too have had to hire a lawyer. Why should you hire a lawyer? Well, ask yourself, do you really know what you're doing and when that semi-professional adjuster is screwing you?
