Driver dies in crash with train

Posted on Sep 19, 2014

A Belmond man was killed on Sunday, September 7, when a Union Pacific train hit the pickup truck he was driving.  Jesse Froelich, 33, was traveling south on Wright County Road R-33 near Eagle Grove and failed to yield to an eastbound train.  He apparently drove around the north side crossing gates at 240th Street as the train—a configuration of two engines with no cars attached—approached.  The advance emergency warning equipment—lights and crossing gates—were operational at the time of the accident.  Mr. Froelich was pronounced dead at the scene.
