Domestic dispute led to arson, firearm arrests

Posted on May 02, 2014

Arson was the cause of a fire that destroyed a mobile home in Newburg on Sunday April 20th.  According to deputies, Matthew Barnes, 24, and his father Walter Barnes, 57, had a domestic altercation the day before that led the father to lock the son out of the mobile home.  Apparently, Matthew then kicked in the front door and pepper sprayed his father in the eyes.  Walter then allegedly shot a loaded firearm into the air outside the home in an attempt to scare off his son.  The fire started the next morning, and deputies believe that Matthew caused the fire.  No one was injured in the fire.  Walter has been arrest for reckless use of a firearm and Matthew is charged with arson and domestic assault.
