Posted on Jul 21, 2014

A Pottawattamie County man was severely injured on the night of Friday, July 4th, when a firework detonated in his hand.  Cole Mayer, 30, of Council Bluffs, was apparently trying to light a large firecracker, known as an “M-80”, when it went off in his hand.  Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker was quoted as saying “It pretty well took that hand off at the wrist.”  A helicopter flew Mr. Mayer to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.  The accident occurred in rural Council Bluffs, in the 13000 block of 220th Street.  M-80s are illegal in Iowa.  The accident remains under investigation.
