Ames police accuse man of leaving the scene after pickup truck strikes pedestrian

Ames police said an officer witnessed a pickup truck hit a man walking across the street and then flee the scene early today in the 100 block of Welch Avenue. The officer said a black Chevrolet Silverado pickup hit the pedestrian. A vehicle matching the description was eventually stopped by Iowa State University police officers. Police said the driver, Jimmy Hatley, 24, of Kansas City, was charged with serious injury by vehicle, leaving the scene of a serious injury accident, operating while intoxicated -- first offense and reckless driving. The pedestrian was taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center and then transferred to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines with serious injuries. His name and condition are not yet available.
