Interesting question and one that I've not had asked of me before today. Semi trucks are covered under federal law because of the nature of their business being multi-state or in the stream of commerce. Tractor Trailers require a limit of $1,000,000 for operation; all other vehicles require coverage amounts according to the laws in their base state. See the Truckers Insurance Group's FAQ's and eHow's discussion of Semi-Truck Insurance . The amount of coverage you need along with the types of loads you carry and the driver's own record will dictate the premium.
For state minimum limits for cars, motorcycles and SUV's see Car Insurance Requirements .
