Q: How should my handgun and ammunition be stored when I travel by plane?
Everything firearm-related must be in your checked luggage. The firearms must be unloaded and locked inside a hard-sided container. Ammunition must be contained in a holder designed specifically for ammunition. You should check in in person and notify the airline of the firearms and ammunition you are carrying. If you fail to do this, you could be fined $1,000. You will be asked to sign an affidavit stating that all firearms are unloaded. Then the Transportation Security Administration will then check your luggage. Failing to transport a firearm properly could lead to a misdemeanor or felony charge, or a suspension of a weapons permit.
