Adair County - This two-car accident happened at 9:37 PM on November 2, 2016 on Highway 25 and 330th Street. According to reports a 2012 Chevrolet Impala being driven by an 82-year-old woman from Greenfield was struck head-on by a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue being driven by 30 year-old Derek Eugene Ueligger from Creston, Iowa. What are the causes of wrong-way drivers, aka “ghost riders”?

1.      Alcohol or drug related driver confusion.

2.      Old age and confusion.

3.      Mental defect or disease.

4.      Purposeful acts including attempts to commit suicide and criminals attempting to elude law enforcement officers.

5.      Inexperience.

6.      Signage confusion and road design.  Broad medians can cause sight confusion with situational awareness.

7.      GPS providing incorrect, inaccurate or confusing information.

I have been covering wrong-way highway head-on car and truck accidents now for over ten years. We have developed a protocol on how to avoid being hit by a wrong-way driver and have isolated the main causes. Alcohol is perhaps the biggest factor involved.
