SUV, truck and car rollover accidents in Iowa are common because many vehicles go fast and have a high center of gravity. They call it the CG, center of gravity, and that has everything to do with why the car you're in starts and then continues to roll multiple times. What can protect you is a seatbelt and shoulder harness along with slower speeds on slick or icy roads. If the road surface starts to accumulate snow or ice and the driver is going faster than you like then say something to him or her about slowing down. After all it is your life. So put down the cell phone and stop texting long enough to realized the danger you're in when a rollover accident occurs because the driver is too distracted to realize what's about to occur.
Today we have several rollover accidents. The first is in Floyd County and occurs in the morning at around 7:30 a.m. on a Monday. It was on Highway 18 involving a 1994 Chrysler Concorde and some slick roads. The car goes into the median where it rolls. It makes me wonder if the wheels struck a culvert and started the rollover. The driver is 49, Mike McClammy who luckily wasn't hurt very bad.
The second rollover is with the Carrion Family from Granville, Iowa and involves a 4-year-old running for help a quarter of a mile away. That's a kid with good instincts. Young Averie ended up doing a live interview on TV in New York City.
I spoke to Brooks, down in Austin, Texas this week about rollover accidents. Apparently he's involved with such a case and has written a post about rollover accidents. See A Harsh Reminder About The Dangers of Texting While Driving and Roll-over Accidents - Recognizing Product Defect Claims. Frankly I don't do a lot with these cases from the standpoint of the auto manufacturer, those I refer to the lawyers in Detroit and work along with them. From my point of view, it's about the driver's negligence and that is where the recovery in Iowa lies.
In Sumner Iowa a family of four got hurt when their pickup truck flipped onto its top on a Sunday. No time was given. Apparently the truck went into the ditch where it struck an embankment and that started the roll. Speed would be a factor to examine along with the age and wear of the tire treads.
To recap, if you want to avoid a rollover the first thing to do is to slow down. Second, drive cautiously and always where your seatbelt and shoulder harness. Don't be afraid to tell the driver to slow down or to let you out.
