Rollover Accidents Are Very Common in Iowa and have Very Similar Elements

It isn’t until you’re in a rollover accident in not so hilly Iowa that you begin to fully appreciate what is meant by the center of gravity being high in an SUV. Well now you do know. The rollover accident is pretty common in Iowa.

The first one is near Hudson, Iowa and involves a Reinbeck woman and her five children (who by the way probably have a claim against Mom as the driver.).

The driver, Abigail Ann Swanson, 26, was headed west on Watters when she lost control and entered the south ditch and rolled her vehicle, according to the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office.
UPDATE WITH NAMES: Rollover accident reported near Hudson.
Then over to Maquoketa, Iowa where the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office worked an accident - a roll-over with life threatening injuries. According to a press release, emergency personnel responded at 5:11 p.m. to a single-vehicle accident on U.S. 61, south of the Maquoketa city limits.
William C. Richardson, 76, of Indianola, was northbound on U.S. 61 when he drove onto the left shoulder, overcorrected and drove off of the right side of the road, rolling over three or four times and coming to rest on its top.

Heading over the Kansas we have 13-year-old girl dying in a single-vehicle rollover type crash near the Nebraska-Kansas border. According to KLKN Newsroom: “The Kansas Highway Patrol says Taylor Issac died in the Saturday morning accident.  Her mother, 39 year old Nicki Issac, was driving from their home in Oklahoma to a high school class reunion in Underwood, Iowa, when their SUV went out of control and rolled.”
In Missouri an Iowa woman was seriously injured in a rollover accident last Wednesday morning in Worth County, Missouri. The story from the St. Joseph News-Press: Sonia Lambson, 46, of Blockton, Iowa, was traveling south on U.S. Highway 169, about three miles north of Grant City, Mo., in a 1999 Volkswagen shortly before 9:30 a.m., according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Ms. Lambson crossed the center line and went off the east side of the road before striking a field entrance.

The vehicle became airborne and upon landing, overturned and came to rest on its wheels, off the road.

And in Cerro Gordo County a Mason City woman was seriously injured in a rollover accident. “At 2:37 p.m. Barnish was driving west on 230th Street when she lost control on the gravel road and entered the north ditch, striking a ditch embankment and then rolling the vehicle into a field drive, according to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department. “ Reported by Mary Pieper of the GlobeGazette.

So what are the common threads for all of these rollover accidents.

  • Single vehicle crash.
  • Each is driving an SUV.
  • The SUV has a high CG.
  • Driving too fast for the conditions.
  • And we have to ask, were the driver’s distracted?
  • Driver’s probably not paying enough attention the road conditions.
