Answer: After you're in a car accident it's not easy to figure out what you're entitled to and who pays for it. One question coming up quite often is who pays for the rental car after I'm in an accident. The answer to this question depends on whether or not you have rental coverage on your own insurance. If you do have coverage, then file with your own car insurance company. If not you'll probably need a credit card to qualify under the rental company rules and a copy of your auto insurance card to prove you have insurance. If you have no credit card or auto insurance in effect then you may not be able to rent a car and will have to figure out some other way to get a car while yours is being fixed.
If the other person's insurance company is refusing and you don't have coverage for auto rental then you're kind of between a rock and a hard place. You will have to "rent" a car from a friend and then try later to get reimbursement. One thing that helps is having a written agreement with a reasonable rental rate as part of the agreement. Don't get greedy and put some ridiculous rate in it, because when you get greedy you lose.
