The Food and Drug Administration issued an official warning to women taking an inhalable drug meant to help osteoporosis. The specific drug is a nasal spray and is currently sold as “Miacalcin” by the company Novartis, and as “Fortical” by the company Upsher-Smith. The drug is chemically known as “calcitonin salmon” and has been prescribed for over 30 years. Recent studies, however, show that the drug may be ineffective and additionally may raise the risk of cancer. The FDA panel voted 12-9 that the negative properties of the drug warranted issuance of a warning to consumers
