There have been several lately. There is the Union Pacific worker in Mason City, the DNR worker mowing at Lake Manawa State Park in Council Bluffs and the Alcoa worker.

The railroad worker was accidentally pinned between two cars; he was working on a coupler when the second car rolled into him, pinning him between the two. On arrival officers met with Union Pacific “Railroad employees who had discovered the body of 36-year-old Georgiy Soloviyov, who was an employee of the railroad. Soloviyov was reportedly working on a railroad car coupling when another car rolled into him, pinning him between two cars.” Radio Iowa

Tendall makes a good point in her story about people just wandering onto the yard and getting hurt. If you don’t know what you’re doing you’re more likely to get injured or killed than a railroad worker who knows how the yard works. So stay out and kids don’t play there.

Lashbrook said, "If you have an employee of Union Pacific that was killed and they know what they are doing, somebody who is just messing around on the railroad tracks isn't going to have half of that knowledge, so if it can happen to him, it can happen to anybody."

The third is the Alcoa worker killed in the plant and the cause wasn’t being released. Workers’ compensation benefits are paid irrespective of how long a worker has been hired. Union affiliation has not benefit either.

“The Alcoa worker killed in an industrial accident Monday night has been identified.

Robert Leech, 45, of Wheatland, Iowa, was a general mechanic at Alcoa Davenport Works since March, according to information Leech’s family released Wednesday through Alcoa.” Brian Wellner, QC Times Reporter
