In this instance we head over to Montreal and the Montreal La Ronde amusement park where a worker working on a ride was actually struck by the rollercoaster ride as it was being operated. He was instantly killed. It’s unclear who was at fault; some seemed to blame the worker, while others the operators. See Worker dies at Montreal amusement park, Postmedia News

Iowa doesn’t really have much in the way of amusement parks. We have Adventureland Amusement Park in Des Moines. It has an interesting looking rollercoaster, an aging structure made of wood supports and beams. All the rides are cataloged on the site into three categories: Thrill, Children’s and Family. I often wondered if the Giant Skywheel might simple come off of its hub and simply roll away from the park tossing people here and there as it meandered towards I-80.

Kansas City has Worlds of Fun. It’s thrill ride that I like was named the Orient Express, but I didn’t find it on the site. Instead they have the Mamba, Prowler, Patriot, the Boomerang and the Timber Wolf. The Orient Express was much like the Boomerang with corks and screws galore. Today they probably wouldn’t allow it but I took a video camera and taped the ride from the passenger’s standpoint. It was fun, but this maintenance worker case points out the more serious side of amusement parks. Workers can be exposed to extreme hazards that cause serious injury and deaths. It’s dangerous work in a hard to control environment.
