The number of fatal crashes in Iowa has increased since last year. There have so far been 239 deadly crashes in 2016 alone, 45 more than last year. Iowa State Trooper Scott Miller said that speeding is a large cause of these accidents. Another huge contributing factor is distracted driving, caused particularly by people using their phones to text while driving. the Iowa DOT has produced statistics to show the number of crashes caused by distracted driving. People continue to look down at their phones while driving, failing to pay attention to the road in front of them and failing to avoid hazards that could be avoided had they kept their eyes on the road. This combined with high speeds and sometimes alcohol will inevitably lead to disaster and further fatal crashes in Iowa.
