They call them financial responsibility laws, but the truth is doing the minimum is rarely an act of responsibility.

As a supplement to my recent coverage of the types of auto insurance coverage, I thought I would provide a list of the minimum auto insurance coverage requirements by state. Each state has its own laws governing the minimum car insurance coverage you need—use this list to find your state and determine your minimum coverage. Or use this list to figure out which states to avoid driving in because of the low limits of coverage it allows its driving citizens.

You’ll notice that most states include three numbers, such as 20/40/10. These are called “split limits” for liability insurance. What this means is that the state requires $20,000 in coverage for damages to another person, $40,000 in coverage for bodily injuries to all injured parties, and $10,000 in coverage for property damage. So under this coverage if three people were in the not-at-fault car they would all have coverage of $40,000 from the at-fault driver’s insurance company but no one of them would be paid more than $20,000 for their damages. And if they were drunk and plowed into your house you’d get $10,000. Pretty slim I’d say.

See how your State protects you; it's taxpaying citizen.
