Then with Two treated, released after accident on Avenue, we have two folks from Cedar Falls we have a one-car accident on Highway 18 with the driver losing control, entering the median area and rolling the van; a 1999 Ford Econoline van. If anyone could design a car that wouldn’t roll over we could save a lot of lives. The passenger and driver are Kully Olson, 21 from Osage and one Russel Fredericksen, 27 from Cedar Falls. Both were taken to Mercy in Mason City.
In the first article I’ve already covered the Sorenson accident so I won’t do it again.
More wrong-site, wrong-side, wrong-patient and wrong-procedure news from around the nation. As the subject is explored and the "time-out" discussed sooner or later these incidents should greatly diminish. At least that's the hope. So button up your lip doc and just do the time-out.
Once again it’s wrong-way day here at the Lombardi Law Firm. I’ve picked up on many more wrong-way drivers and collisions from around the nation. Today we post as many of those news stories as we are able to find. At the end of the post in the footer you’ll find a list of all the reasons, causes, safety recommendations and avoidance ideas that I’ve come up with after spending the last several years following these collisions. Of course the number one reason is alcohol related driving. Impaired driving is the number one cause.
I'm a personal injury lawyer and every Saturday I list the Iowa State Patrol injury and fatality reports on our firm website. I started doing it after a client told me they liked my analysis of the accident and how the law would view their claim. Unfortunately there are way too many accidents in Iowa and this lawyer likes to have a life, so if you would like your personal injury or property damage accident analyzed contact me and we can talk about it. If you have questions about what the investigating officer's report means, or how to interpret it, give Steve Lombardi a call at 515-222-1110 or send him an email at sdlombardi@aol.com.
Here is a news item from Cloquet, Minnesota involving I-35. Typically we assume we are safe driving at highway speeds and also that the design of the road surface, the bridge railings and overpass structure will protect us from a fall. But in this case the woman plunged over the side rail of an overpass after skidding and running up the snow bank, which by the way should have been plowed out of there. I'm guessing that maintenance issues will become a more serious problem as state budgets get worse. So be aware of what can happen and how accidents start; that way you can slow down and stay alive. Enjoy the article.
Woman whose car fell off Cloquet bridge 'lucky to have survived'

The car landed where northbound I-35 and Minnesota Highway 33 merge. “The best we could tell is that it landed on its roof,” Vereecken said. ...

In today’s blog we have an interesting reference site about wrong-site, wrong-patient and wrong-procedure surgeries. The Renal & Urology News site has an interesting article dated January 5, 2011 titled, Wrong-Site, Wrong-Patient Surgeries Found to Persist, By Ann w. Latner, JD. In the article Ms. Latner discussed a study that considered the insurance losses for 6,000 patient errors in Colorado between 2002 and 2008. Imagine this is only Colorado. The causes might surprise you.
It’s Monday, the weekend is all but a memory and we are back to the grind of our working weeks. Let’s take a few minutes to see what the Register and KCCI are reporting about personal injury accidents in Iowa. The Des Moines register reported about the Boone fatality case that I blogged about on Saturday, the Powell collision. There was a six-car crash on I-235 in the westbound lanes shortly after 5:40 on the evening of January 7, 2011.
WHY IS A WORKING SMOKE DETECTOR VITALLY IMPORTANT TO YOUR FAMILY'S SAFETY?
There is always a delay from the time the fire starts until the fire fighters arrive. Obviously the quicker your family receives a warning the sooner they can get safely out of the burning house. That means you need some system in place for an early warning. The significance of operable smoke detectors should be clear. Yes? No? If no, then go back and reread what I just wrote.
Winter conditions are making driving conditions treacherous. In this one the driver comes across the center line and hits another car head-on sending both the passengers to the hospital. The not-at-fault car had Iowa people from Mt. Vernon in it. The other was an 21-year-old driver from Genoa. Frances Amundson and her 15-year-old passenger were freed using the Jaws of Life and taken to Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse. This is a Highway 35 venue.
This is an interesting accident that I've not heard about previously, but one that I half expect to see more of; except that the postal workers seem to be pretty adept at watching out for their own safety. In this personal injury accident a postal worker was struck by a van while delivering the mail. The postman is not Neuman, he's Gregory Kline from Bettendorf, Iowa. He's 52-years-old and was crossing West 3rd Street heading north; but beyond that there isn't much detail in the news article. The story was covered by WQAD, News 8 out of southeast Iowa.

In the news today we have more wrong-way driving accidents. There are stories from all over the United States and from several interstate highways. In other posts I add our findings and I’ll add those findings at the end of this post.
If you think wrong-way drivers on the Interstate Highway system is a once-in-a-while thing, think again. Look at these reports from Google. It seems like there is an epidemic of wrong-way collisions and crashes out there. We've had several wrong-way drivers and accidents in Iowa.
More wrong way drivers on Interstate Highways are in the news. Here is a video of the news report. We’ve been pointing out the seriousness of wrong-way drivers for a long time. I’ve come up with a series of points to avoid wrong way drivers, to avoid being a wrong way driver and to recognize those situations where wrong way drivers are more likely to be encountered. First let’s look at this video from Derby on Route 8.
