Driver dies in accident; wife is left to pick up the pieces

This is an unusual accident because of how it happened. But as described the guy driving the 1999 Dodge pickup truck was on I-235 at the NE Broadway Avenue overpass when he went off the road and landed below on Broadway, then slid into the ditch; along the way he was ejected and killed. Poor guy was just 41-years-of-age. The accident happened at 3:35 in the morning of May 6th, 2012. If he was married and working his widow and/or dependent children will be entitled to file a workers’ compensation claim and if they can show another at-fault driver was involved there is perhaps a personal injury claim, otherwise described as a third-party claim.

As indicated below the accident remains under investigation.

There’s been quite a bit written about this accident. Let’s start with the Ames Tribune and Luke Jennett’s article. Nope, nothing more here than we got in the initial police report, although the comment is very flattering. The first Des Moines Register article by Grant Rodgers, reporter is too early to provide much more detail. Let’s get back to the Ames Trib. This second article in the Trib, an autopsy has his photograph and nice long description of his life. He was born in South Dakota in 1971, attended grade school in Waterloo, Iowa, then served in the U.S. Navy. He got married, then worked construction and was now attending DMACC in the human services college. He was further described as, “Terry was a member of AA. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, camping, yard work and home improvement, playing softball and basketball, watching the Discovery and History channels and “Law and Order,” and outdoor grilling. Terry was an avid Green Bay Packers and Iowa Hawkeyes football fan.”

He’s survived by many including a wife and two sons. Having grown up in a household where our father died at a young age this poor wife must be asking the same questions my mother did. My advice is to initially get online and apply for Social Security Survivors Benefits. The link to the survivor benefits is here. As my mother soon found out, your work is just beginning. She raised four boys and one girl. Good luck!
